From E-Learning Faculty Modules
WELCOME TO K-STATE'S E-LEARNING FACULTY MODULES!
The E-Learning Faculty Modules have been developed for K-State faculty and staff who want to enhance online teaching and learning skills. This E-Learning Faculty Modules resource, developed by a campus-wide team, was designed to meet the needs of those just beginning to teach online, those who have taught for several semesters and are ready for more instructional ideas and also for those seasoned online instructors who are ready to challenge themselves and move to another level of teaching.
There are three Main Modules called Beginner’s Studio, E-Learning Central and Advanced Workshop. Other components available include several Stand-Alone Modules that are topic specific and offer excellent information on topics of great interest to faculty. You will find a section called Take 5 where specific instructional technology applications are offered. Participants are welcome to contribute his or her ideas to the site. One of the best ways to learn is from colleagues.
The “Help” link in the left column gives information on how to post comments to the Faculty Share Area. K-State faculty can share their experiences, ideas and techniques for others at K-State to view. There is also a General Reference section where you will find additional resources that are useful. The wiki can be accessed anytime-anyplace to accommodate busy schedules. At the end of the modules, contact information is given for those K-State experts who developed that particular module. This wiki will be constantly changing with new modules being developed and others updated, so please visit often and look for newly developed segments.
NOTE for Global Campus Grant Awardees: The Stand-Alone Modules are to be used by all faculty members but are required for those faculty members who are awarded course or program development grants from K-State Global Campus. K-State Online (KSOL) will be utilized for these faculty members to complete the required modules including an accompanying short quiz. Complete information on the RFP process follows in the section on Stand-Alone Modules.
Faculty members can start with the Beginners’ Studio and work through all modules or select the modules they think best fit their skill level. Faculty are encouraged to use information from any of the areas. These are available for viewing by topic via the Community Portal.
BEGINNERS' STUDIO entries focus on those just starting out in online learning. These offer supportive and foundational grounding for the building of a rewarding and professional online learning experience. To get an overview of e-learning considerations, click on Getting Started Module.
E-LEARNING CENTRAL entries support those who've been teaching online for a few years. These provide value-added ways to continue evolving quality in electronic (e-)learning.
ADVANCED WORKSHOP offers information for those who have been teaching online for a number of years and who have more specific advancement needs.
STAND-ALONE E-LEARNING MODULES FOR FACULTY
We encourage K-State faculty receiving grant funds for the development of online courses to review the following critical modules. These Stand Alone modules offer faculty members an experience of 60 minutes or less that address topics pertinent to online distance education. Content comes from campus experts and is partially presented in video format. Each stand alone module may include additional hyperlinks to web resources and web activities. These may serve as pre- or post-activities to the content presented in the video segments. Opportunity for reflection after viewing the stand alone modules will be provided. Assessment opportunities will also exist within each module.
Because of the crucial nature of the topics, completion of several Stand Alone modules will be required for those who are receiving Global Campus grant development money. The required modules are listed below and are also in a K-State Online class site. Faculty who receive Global Campus grant money will be added to the KSOL class to review the modules and then complete short quizzes related to each topic. GETTING STARTED: This Getting Started Module may be accessed at the following location Getting Started Module. This multimedia slideshow with videos highlights some basics of quality e-learning.
ACCESSIBILITY FOR ONLINE LEARNERS: Accessibility is a critical legal requirement for online courses. This module provides a brief overview of some accessibility concerns. A video entitled Accessibility by April Penick provides specific information about K-State's Student Access Center. Additional information about accessibility requirements for online courses is also provided.

FAIR USE AND COPYRIGHT: Intellectual Property addresses IP issues related to both the build of an online course and the uses of copyrighted contents by the learners and instructor; this page sets a basic context. An overview of Copyright Basicsis available as well as information on Fair Use, Alternatives to Copyrighted Materials, Your Responsibilities and Copyright & Using Media in the Online Classroom. ASSESSMENT OF ONLINE STUDENT LEARNING: This is a link to a video on Assessment and Student Learning in an Online Environment. This module includes a video on What Works. Information on assessment methods such as wikis, message boards, writing activities and e-portfolios make up the rest of this module.
HONESTY AND INTEGRITY IN ONLINE LEARNING: Academic Integrity vs. Dishonesty focuses on the requirements of the Honor and Integrity expectations of the campus and some strategies for achieving this in online learning. LIBRARY RESOURCES AND SERVICES: The library provides a wide variety of resources and support services for online instructors and learners. The following videos will briefly explain how the library staff and services can help you and your students in your distance courses.
Faculty are encouraged to make some resources available to their students in online courses. Cool Tools highlights a variety of tools available to students in a colorful digital flyer. This student flyer lets learners know what services the library will provide for them. Faculty may also review Distance Education Faculty's Top 10 Points about Library Services which highlights a countdown of library services.

Kansas State University has successfully provided distance courses and degrees to non-traditional learners for many years and has received positive recognition through awards from prestigious national organizations. Many of these awards went to outstanding faculty members who paved the way in online teaching. While some faculty members have designed award winning courses, others are asking how to approach a higher level of quality in their own courses.
As the importance, visibility and continuing growth of online instruction continues to emerge, Kansas State University, like other universities, has attempted to define quality in online courses by developing a K-State Quality E-Learning Rubric. The K-State Rubric for Quality E-Learning (docx) is available for use in reviewing/scoring an online course. The robust rubric is based on well accepted standards applied by other universities and incorporates conventional best practices in online instruction. This rubric is also available in pdf format: K-State Rubric for Quality E-Learning (pdf). The first version of this was created back in 2008, and it has been evolved over the years under the auspices of iTAC and Global Campus (formerly Continuing Education).
Faculty, administrators and instructional designers located across the K-State campuses participated in the development of the rubric. The instructional designers are prepared to work with faculty members who use this tool. This section of the wiki currently contains the rubric and will house suggestions, examples and other helpful information now in the development stage.
It is hoped that the use of the rubric and the other materials found in the wiki will be of great help to faculty members teaching in an online environment. The rubric has been created to provide assistance as instructors design, develop and deliver online courses of the highest quality.
K-State's point persons for e-learning quality are Laura Widenor (firstname.lastname@example.org) and Shalin Hai-Jew (email@example.com). There are many others on campus who work to ensure e-learning quality, and both individuals can make introductions and point faculty and staff to other resources on campus.
FACULTY SHARE AREA
The E-Learning Faculty Modules were developed in a wiki format to encourage K-State faculty to share information, teaching experiences and digital resources with other faculty through the Faculty Share page. Faculty members initiate a post on a particular topic, and others will add to that posting. This area offers an informal way for you to connect with others on campus. The E-Learning Faculty Modules site was built for K-Staters as a specific training tool for those teaching K-State distance classes.
Anyone who wants to post has to Create an Account / Log In. They have to use their K-State eIDs to log in but can use a different password. No non-K-Staters will be enabled to use this site because this is an internal site to Kansas State University. This resource is available on the World Wide Web (WWW) for easy access for K-Staters generally.
This "Best Practices" section collects e-learning faculty members' best strategies from their online courses, short courses and trainings.
Technology rapidly changes and new instructional tools constantly become available. The Take 5 section of the E-Learning Faculty Modules is devoted to highlighting teaching techniques specific to particular technologies in five minute clips. K-State IT staff, instructional designers and faculty members share their expertise and knowledge and are available for further discussion should you need more information.

'K-State Rubric for Quality E-Learning': A short, team-developed rubric for quality e-learning is available for download: K-State Rubric for Quality E-Learning. An editable .docx version is also available: K-State Rubric for Quality E-Learning (docx).
This section also contains the archive of Instructional Design Technology Roundtables video series. This series ran from 2004 - 2012. A number of faculty and staff presented their knowledge in this series.
