20 Tech Skills for Online Educators

From E-Learning Faculty Modules

A Need to Know for Online Educators--and a Great Book!

By Lynda Spire

On December 6, 2011, Dean Sue Maes gave a presentation at the First Tuesday for K-State department heads. One of the interesting points of the presentation was a list of 20 teaching or communication technologies that students taking online courses wish their instructors were proficient in using. This is the list.

20 tech skills every educator should have whether you are inside the regular classroom or teaching online:

  • Google Tools knowledge
  • Google Earth knowledge
  • Wiki knowledge
  • Blogging knowledge
  • Spreadsheets skills
  • Database skills
  • Social bookmarking knowledge
  • Social networking knowledge
  • Web resources in content (domain) area
  • Web searching skills
  • Web 2.0 tools
  • Website design and management skills
  • Presentation tools
  • IM knowledge
  • Video and podcasting
  • RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feeds
  • Mobile and handheld computing
  • Virtual worlds
  • Collaboration and communication tools
  • Interactive white board skills

Like many in the audience, I wondered how many faculty members at K-State would feel comfortable with this list as it applied to their knowledge and skill level and if they were not comfortable with all items on the list, how they could gain information about each item.

The New Digital Shoreline

During the holiday break, I had a chance to read Dr. Roger McHaney’s new book called The New Digital Shoreline and found the answer! This book presents a comprehensive look at communication and teaching technologies embraced by millenials. Many believe that these new teaching tools are revolutionizing higher education. Roger’s book offers a very comfortable read with excellent descriptions of this technology----and his references to K-State faculty members who are successfully using this new technology makes it even more fun to read. Copies of the book are available at Varney’s in the textbook section.
