Module Summary

By asking students questions about your course, you can incorporate their suggestions into your teaching. It is important to assess the outcome of the course and evaluate whether the learning objectives and goals have been met.

TEVAL — The TEVAL system allows you to obtain feedback from students on your teaching of the course. TEVAL results are compiled by the Teaching and Learning Center [formerly the Center for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning (CATL)] and are confidential.

IDEA — The IDEA system also allows you to obtain confidential feedback from students on your of the course. Rather than emphasizing your teaching techniques or personality, the IDEA system focuses on student learning.

Main Concepts

Course evaluation is one of the few ways that you, the instructor, have an opportunity to get an understanding on whether you are reaching your students or not. Typically, the main way courses are evaluated is through the use of TEVAL or IDEA systems at the end of the semester. This method of whole course evaluation is considered to be formal in nature. Alternatively, you can periodically ask questions of your students regarding particular pieces instruction on a less formal basis using a wide variety of methods including email and the K-State Survey system.

Formal evaluation is currently required for all courses offered at K-State, including online courses. Such formal course evaluation is helpful for getting an overall impression of the success of your course and improving teaching from semester to semester. However, if you want to a clear view of how your students are doing during the interim of the course, you will need to informally ask questions from time-to-time. But be forewarned, asking for your students’ opinions on the course, your assignments, and your teaching can be problematic. Students will have the expectation that you will act on their comments. So, it is very important to address their input, even if you chose not to follow their suggestions.

How to

In order to use the online TEVAL system you must have instructor status in K-State Online. This can be determined by whether or not you have the “Create a Course” button in your K-State Online Organizer. If you do NOT see that button on the left side of your organizer, contact the IT Help Desk and request that your status be updated.

In addition, you need to also be listed as the “primary instructor” on the roster of the given course you wish to use the TEVAL in. If both of these conditions are not met, you will not be able to use the online TEVAL system.
