This module focuses on academic writing and publishing, in a digital age. This will take learners through the initial steps of brainstorming ideas for their respective domain fields. This will offer some basic ideas of the "ground rules" for publication. This will also set some basic expectations for what academic publishing involves currently.
- Define academic publishing as a field
- Review the conventions and ethics of academic writing
- Discuss the relevant laws affecting academic publishing
- Describe information gathering and research
- Describe some written artifacts related to publishing
- Review usual academic publisher processes
- Explain imagery concerns for publishing
- Describe multimedia often created for academic publication
- Discuss issues for writers in publishing online
- Collaborate around a workshop for academic research and writing (individual specialty identification, identifying potential publishers, strategizing writing projects, identifying potential professional allies, and political and university considerations)

The WWW offers a wide range of resources in a number of fields. The expectations and terms are continually changing, so it helps to use the most recent resources. Also, select resources from reputable publishing houses and companies. Avoid custom publishing.

Publishing always involves some risk.
Make sure that you're
- ready to publish,
- that you have original work,
- that you have something to contribute to the greater good,
- and that you're confident enough to proceed.
Once a work has been released to the public, it is out there for a variety of uses. People who publish prematurely may shut down their own creative instincts if they find the rough-and-tumble of the publishing environment too difficult.
Then, once you've decided, proceed with caution.
1. Please identify 5 contemporary academic publications in your domain field that you may wish to publish in. (It helps to have read these and to be familiar with the contents and the editorial policies).
2. Make a list of their contact information, their publication schedule, their editorial policies, and the names of the editors / editorial board members.
Initial Work on a Draft Paper / Chapter
3. Draft some initial ideas for what you may wish to write about.
4. Draft some query letters.
5. Plan your initial research for one paper.
6. Outline the contents that you will need for this paper.
7. Begin work on the writing project.
